Rector & President - The University of Iceland

Jón Atli Benediktsson is the President and Rector of the University of Iceland since July 1, 2015 and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He served as Pro-Rector for Science and Academic Affairs at University of Iceland from 2009 to 2015 and has been a member of the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering since 1991. His research interests are in remote sensing, biomedical analysis of signals, pattern recognition, digital image processing, and signal processing, and he has published extensively in those fields. Dr. Benediktsson was the 2011-2012 President of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society and the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing from 2003 to 2008. Dr. Benediktsson is a co-founder of the biomedical start-up company Oxymap ( and has served on numerous boards. He has received many professional awards and is a Fellow of both IEEE and SPIE.
Dr. Benediktsson received the Cand.Sci. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Iceland, Reykjavik, in 1984, and the M.S.E.E. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, U.S.A., in 1987 and 1990, respectively.
